You see I'm not much of a pop-fan, but an officemate who suprisingly has very good taste in music introduced me to some female soloists who at first may sound poppish but could actually fall for alternative...
So my picky ears are saved from mutilation...
Angela Aki and A Fine Frenzy are good picks...I particularly fell in-love with Aki after I heard her sing a Japanese version of "Today" of The Smashing Pumpkins (who happen to be the best punk/emo band ever to exist--about emo/punk...since I'm not versed with genres, how do I categorize SP or the 90's emo-ish bands...?)
